Early the next morning, before dawn, Beryl slid into the dark and made her way to the room next to the gym.
It didnât take her long to find the peephole; there were peepholes everywhere, usually as well hidden as a light switch.
She peered into the gym, catching a whiff of male . . . something . . .
Legless was holding court, parading like a boxer in the ring, urging his âladsâ to give their all âfor the city.â
â
It was Manifesto the Great who first saw her peering through the peephole. Poised by the rowing machine in his wheelchair, he caught Leglessâs eye.
âKeep shtum,â mouthed Legless.
Not an easy thing to do for an angry man who had no idea what âshtumâ was.
They cycled on for an hour . . . Legless, between puffs, talking of all they were lighting up.
âThatâll be the canteen fueled, the institute set for the day . . .â
The men grunted.
âThis town couldnât run without us.â
âHear, hear!â huffed a few.
Legless stood up to pedal again . . .
The men followed, pushing harder.
Manifesto the Great made grimacing faces at the peephole.
âNow for the sewage plant.â
The men looked up. (The sewage plant recycled itsâ own energy).
âJust kidding,â laughed Legless.
The men, sweating like boxers after twenty rounds, said nothing.
âMeant the streetlights,â said Legless.
The men groaned.
Manifesto the Great swore.
Legless stopped.
âOr maybe not . . .â
He turned and flashed a look Berylâs way, like he knew she was there.
She stopped, gasping, as the face that had launched a dozen statues caught her eye.
Get a grip.
The men stopped; machines squealed to a halt.
Silence . . .
Legless strutted.
Beryl gulped.
He stopped near Manifesto the Great, lifted his Planet Hy Manâs Geographic, and turned to the peephole.
âShit,â muttered Beryl.
âThereâll be no more cycling today,â shouted Legless like a preacher.
The men, with a cheer, flopped into their seats.
